Singlia: Getting Through Cuffing Season

Singlia: Getting Through Cuffing Season

According to Urban Dictionary (where I go to for all my questions) Cuffing Season is when the single people of the world find themselves along with the rest of the world desiring to be "Cuffed", which means like handcuffed to someone aka to enter a relationship.  This desire stems from cold temperatures and the issue of having to be inside - which ya know, gets lonely.

I get that this is a real thing.  I feel it too I promise.  But I'd be lying if I didn't admit that it bothers the sh*t out of me.

Cuffing season has become a buzzword, all them fancy dating apps like bumble and the tinder are full of cuffers trying to get all cuffed up.  So does this mean that we poor singles are desperate?  Because that's what it sounds like to me and I beg to differ.  I understand that cuddling is wonderful, but the universal conversation about cuffing season is starting to overwhelm.

I'll stop belaboring my point, here are 5 ways to get through cuffing season.

1.  Just Get Cuffed

If you really really don't want to sleep diagonally in your bed surrounded by jimmy johns wrappers THAT'S FINE WITH ME.

Find your cuffing partner but be honest about your intentions if you're not looking for something serious.

I understand this drive, to have someone to cuddle and see movies and do holiday-themed things with. So if you got the cuff fever, go on and find your wo/man.

2. Start a New Hobby

Alright so if you, like me, don't really want to give up your independence slash don't really feel like putting the effort into meeting someone, find a hobby.  This could really be anything, the point is to find something that will teach you something and keep you busy.

One of my lazy hobbies is listening to a ridiculous amount of podcasts - you could be unlazy about it and listen while cleaning or cooking or petting your animal.  Here are my faves:

Lady Lovin':  For all that stuff you want to talk about and ask about but sometimes feels weird.

How I built this: If you want to know how things like Instagram and Clif bar were started - pretty inspiring yo.

Freakonomics:  I love Stephen Dubner, you will too.  The guy is brilliant.  Listen to the self improvement month episodes for some ideas on how to be awesome.

3. Do that thing you've been putting off

Do you also have a list of things that you've wanted to accomplish for what feels like forever?  Me too.  So, let's do them yeah?  Being productive is insanely beneficial.  If you've wanted to sign up to be a foster parent for a pup, do it.  If you've wanted to ask your coworker out but are terrified, just do it.  Maybe you'll cuff.

A podcast I listen to called Invisibilia (ILIA!) produced a wonderful episode all about fear.  Listen to it.  But I'll tell you the best part of it.  They give you the equation for fear.  Which is:

Thinking + Time = Fear.

Fear cannot exist if either of the variables do not.  So, stop thinking about it and do it already.

4. Join Bumble BFF

Find some new friends!  Bumble BFF is an incredible idea.  I find there are lots of ladies that are new to the city.  Be a tour guide for them and show them how awesome this city is even if it's cold af.

Be aware though that if you want to avoid flipping through the boys, it doesn't take much to switch to the date side.  Maybe self control can be my new hobby.

5. Make a lofty goal

Move to Canada, save up for a vacation, stop drinking, kiss a stranger, try out for American Idol.  Whatever it is you want from the world, go out and take some steps to get it.  I think the loftiest goal in the world is to make yourself happy - so figure out how to do that.  You can take very little baby steps each day to get you closer to your goal.

A good example is always confidence, if you want to gain confidence, do something that tests it just a little bit everyday.  You'll soon find it getting easier and easier to feel confident in your own skin.
